CAM Walker / Moon Boot

A simple, yet incredibly effective device, the CAM Walker or "Moon Boot' has been used for decades to support the lower limb following injury.  But how much do you know about the Moon Boot?  Why is it so effective? And what exactly does CAM Walker stand for?  Read on to find out the answer to these questions and more!

One of the most commonly fitted Orthopaedic devices for lower limb injuries is the Controlled Ankle Motion Walker or “CAM Walker”.  More colloquially referred to as a Moon Boot, the CAM Walker may be prescribed for the treatment and stabilisation of lower limb fractures, sprains, tendon or ligament injuries or also to manage skin integrity concerns (such as diabetic ulcers).

A 5th Metatarsal Fracture is a common example of an injury that may require a CAM Walker for support.

As its name suggests, the CAM Walker is designed to restrict or ‘Control’ motion of the ankle.  Restriction of movement at this joint provides a supportive rehabilitation environment allowing for recovery following injury or during treatment of ongoing conditions.  By integrating this immobilisation into a ‘boot’ design, it also provides a means for safe transfers or weightbearing if allowed during recovery.

The addition of a “Rocker sole” to the bottom of the boot provides improved mobility for when weightbearing is allowed.  The rocker sole smooths forward progression, whilst maintaining a rigid, supportive environment for the foot/ankle complex.

The CAM Walker is designed to treat numerous conditions, and as such there are many variations on the base design.  Inflatable liners, vacuum liners, Stirrup uprights, Solid Shells and adjustable ankle positioning are just some of the options available for selection when prescribing and fitting a CAM Walker.

As a boot worn for an extended period of time, it is common to use a sock under the CAM Walker that is changed regularly, as well as utilise a second liner that may be changed and washed at regular intervals, to ensure the maintenance of hygiene in an area prone to perspiring and odour.
